About this laboratory
This platform publishes the research data of The Skerðingsstaðir Experiment as it accumulates: a doctoral research programme measuring whether regenerative, AI-operated tourism gives more than it takes, on a coastal parcel inside Iceland's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Instruments stream in, faults are public, provenance is checksummed, and the answer will be published whatever it is.
The retreat and the research
Two fronts of one undertaking share this ground. Districthive is building the retreat itself: five staff-absent cabins on a coastal parcel that holds consent for a 100-room hotel, with that consent deliberately left unexercised, opening in 2027; the prospectus tells that story. The Skerðingsstaðir Experiment is the doctoral research programme wrapped around the build: instruments deployed ahead of ground-breaking, a matched control shoreline, open live data, and six planned papers measuring whether this kind of tourism gives more than it takes, across design, economy, community, wildlife, guest wellbeing and the site's thousand-year past. The build is the experiment, and this platform is where its evidence lives.
What is open
All research data, live and archived, under an open licence with attribution. Aggregated dashboards are public; full raw datasets ship on request; the API serves keyed read access to everyone.
What is not
No personal or guest-level data, ever, by construction. Sensitive ecological locations are generalised. Partner datasets release on partner schedules. The platform code is bespoke to this site: documented and open to scrutiny, not shipped as installable software.
Confirmatory vs exploratory
Pre-registered confirmatory analyses are separated from the exploratory browsing this site invites. The Correlate workbench is permanently labelled exploratory; findings appear in the papers.
Contact & API keys
Researchers, students and anyone curious: write to team@districthive.com to request an API key, bulk raw archives, or a conversation about the programme. Keys are issued freely; they exist for rate control, not gatekeeping.
